Kamimachi: A Japanese Noodle Restaurant in Shanghai

Bringing Japanese Food Culture to the World

This restaurant, designed by Takashi Yamamori, aims to spread Japanese noodle and food culture to China and the world. Located in the heart of Shanghai, Kamimachi is a unique dining experience that combines traditional Japanese elements with a modern twist.

To create an authentic Japanese atmosphere, the design team drew inspiration from the concept of "eating on a pier with a big roof." The restaurant is situated on the second floor, and the goal was to recreate the feeling of dining under the eaves of a traditional Japanese veranda.

One of the standout features of Kamimachi is the use of white wood louvers that wrap around the space. These louvers not only provide a sense of privacy but also create a gentle and comforting ambiance. The design successfully balances the bustling energy of the metropolis with the tranquility of the interior space.

By creating a space under the eaves in the form of a roof, Kamimachi offers a unique dining experience that transports guests to a traditional Japanese setting. The combination of the louvered walls, the warm lighting, and the carefully selected furniture creates an inviting and cozy atmosphere.

The attention to detail in the design is evident, with every element carefully considered to enhance the overall dining experience. From the choice of materials to the layout of the space, every aspect has been thoughtfully executed.

Kamimachi opened its doors in January 2020 and has since become a popular destination for those seeking an authentic taste of Japan in Shanghai. The design has received recognition for its creativity and ingenuity, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021.

Photographer Yuya Morii beautifully captures the essence of Kamimachi, showcasing the harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary design elements.

With its unique concept and impeccable execution, Kamimachi is not just a restaurant but a cultural experience that celebrates the rich heritage of Japanese cuisine.
